cleartool: Error: Timed out trying to start vob_server for vob ccadmin01:D:\Clea

cleartool: Error: See albd or vob error logs on host ccadmin01

When I execute the command from the client, the vob_server appears started up on windows task manager on the server but after a couple of minutes shows the error message on the client. I've turned off windows firewall, checked up ports, changed vob_server.exe, vobrpc_server, albd_server properties to run as an administrator but it didn't work. The server Operative System is Windows Server 2008 R2 and ClearCase 7.1.2.

Can anybody help me please?

Thanks

Posted: Nov 10, 2010 11:06:24 AM Hi,

I am receiving what for me is an unusual error when running setview, the dynamic view starts and works correctly, but it gives the following error:

This is a dynamic view

[/user/jay] cleartool setview jay.stoc
cleartool: Error: Unable to open file "/user/.view.dat": No such file or directory.
cleartool: Warning: Unable to open snapshot view "/user".

The view used to not give this error and when looking at the results of cleartool lsview -long -properties everything is correct. Other views stored in the same location and tagged the same way do not have this error.

Appreciate any help anyone can give in figuring out what is causing this.

Thanks,
-Jay

I assume "/user" is a global mount point that is mounted on every machine (i.e. /net, /hosts, /home, etc.)?

Here are just a few thoughts:

It could be a strange automounter issue. Have you rebooted since you started getting the error?
Is anyone else who has a view stored in "/user/..." getting the same error?
It seems as though someone may have (accidentally) created a snapshot view stored at "/user", then deleted the ".view.dat" file. Then, when you're in "/user/jay", ClearCase thinks you're in a snapshot view, so when you try to set a view, it tries to access the snapshot view you are currently in ("Working directory view" vs. "Set view") and complains because it can't find the ".view.dat" file of the snapshot view.
Try this: Cd into "/user/jay" and execute `cleartool pwv`. What output do you get? Now cd into "/user" and do the same thing.

Accessing files in ClearCase through PowerShell

I am trying to copy some files out of ClearCase using PowerShell. I don't need to actually check them out - it's part of a build process, so I just want to be able to grab copies of them.

My guess is that I need to use cleartool, perhaps with "find", but I'm having trouble actually getting to the files that I want. No matter what "paths" I use I always get an error message. For example:

cleartool find My_VOB\A_Folder\A_Subfolder -print

gives me the error message, "No such file or directory."

I'm trying to make this script reusable by everyone in our development group, so I'd prefer not to have it tied to any specific view. Do I need to create a view on the fly to work with ClearCase?

Thanks for any help or advice!

Subject: Configuration Management the build system's job? - by: jptownsend

Mark,

I guess will have to agree to disagree. But keep this in mind, I say as a CM person I typically don't do that many CM activities, it is either done by developers or testers. Now they may or may not know they are doing CM things but they are. So if you look at CM activities I would go so far as to say that Developers do about 50% of all CM activities and testers about 40% and CM folks about 10% at least that's been my experience.

Regards,

Joe

Consider the following scenario.

Following streams are needed to be delivered to integration stream. And the below streams are derived from the integration stream.

Development Stream A
Development Stream B
Development Stream C
Development Stream D
Development Stream E

After the Delivery happens a QA test will be happened.

At a certain time QA reports that all the changes related to A, C and E are tested and should be sent to production.

So we would require removing B and D from the merged code.

Note: I dont want to blowup the versions in integration stream.i.e B and D changes.

Please advise me how to achive this or please suggest the proper stream statergy to accomplish this.

Thanks in Advance

ClearCase Explorer is used with your local ClearCase client and acts just like the Windows Explorer, except with the ability to perform ClearCase actions within it.

You use CCRC when you don't want to install ClearCase on a client machine and have ClearCase installed on a server that has the CCRC Server enabled. This allows users to remotely connect to ClearCase views/VOBs without the need to install ClearCase on their machine.

Subject: Distributed vs Centralised SCM? - by: robertc

I'd be interested in feedback from others on this subject, and particularly comparing and contrasting the use of distributed tools such as git and mercurial (and others) vs their more centralised brethren, be they open source (subversion) or commercial.

The requirements for developing something like Linux are certainly different to those for many commercial organisations IMO.

Some of this comes from comments on the posting I made about an upcoming BCS CMSG talk on 25 Nov in London (which directly addresses the theme):

2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29255): Ok: Reading license database file /var/adm/rational/clearcase/license.db at 10/20/10 14:20:31
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29255): Ok: rgy_flush_interval set to 90
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29255): Ok: Registry server type is "master".
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29255): Ok: Initializing Job Scheduler Service.
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29255): Ok: Job Scheduler Service loaded.
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29256): Ok: Server up and running
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29256): Error: bind: Address already in use
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29256): Error: Unable to setup "udp" RPC service.
2010-10-20T14:20:31+02:00 albd_server(29256): Ok: Exiting, status = 0

the process id is always a new one and it is different to the correct albd_process ID.
so it seems, that "something" tries to launch another albd_server process ??? - and of course this fails, because UDP port 371 is already in use.

any ideas ?

Cheers,
Uwe

Thanks

Posted: Nov 08, 2010 10:18:55 AM   in response to: Uwe Satthoff in response to: Uwe Satthoff's post FYI :

I found the reason which caused a second albd process to be launched every 10 minutes.

There was a process running in the background executing /etc/rc2.d/S77clearcase start -repeat And it tried to start ClearCase every 10 minutes on the server.
After deleting the file /tmp/Clearcase.retrying the background process terminated.

The background process was started from a reboot, which was interrupted and started again - and this left the background process.

Cheers,
Uwe

Posted: Jul 22, 2010 01:23:12 PM When you run the Cleartool describe command, there is a section called "VOB holds objects from the following views" (see below).

I know you can remove these old references via "cleartool rmview -uuid", to remove old checked out objects references.

We have some VOBs that have been opened for years, with many closed projects. The list of old view references (where checkouts do not exist) can number in the hundreds.

My question is... Can you remove these old references? Does removing them hurt anything? We have a PERL script that can remove them pretty easily, we just want to make sure it won't hurt anything.

cmd-context describe -long vob:.versioned object base "\hw" created 15-Dec-98.09:34:00 by jenny.adm@oxygen"VOB dedicated to development of "hello, world" program" VOB family feature level: 2 VOB storage host:pathname "oxygen:c:\users\vb_store\tut\tut.vbs" VOB storage global pathname "\\oxygen\users\vb_store\tut\tut.vbs" VOB ownership: owner jackson group dvt VOB holds objects from the following views: oxygen:\vb_store\tut\old.vws[uuid 249356fe.d50f11cb.a3fd.00:01:56:01:0a:4f]

Posted: Jul 22, 2010 06:43:09 PM   in response to: gdorrell in response to: gdorrell's post There is no "danger" as such but there is something to consider... If some of the checkouts are for directories, and that the people who held the checkouts had added new elements into those checked out directories... its not impossible that you might end up with extra things appearing in lost+found.

Its highly likely that if there are any of these that they have never been visible to any other users of your vobs so it isn't dangerous... maybe a little disturbing :-)

Posted: Jul 22, 2010 06:54:36 PM   in response to: gdorrell in response to: gdorrell's post There are no checkouts currently in the vob so I am not worried about losing anything like that. I just don't know why the entries are there. Any other reasons they may be in there?

Posted: Jul 22, 2010 07:41:55 PM   in response to: gdorrell in response to: gdorrell's post Hmm... they would normally refer to checkouts. The only other thing that comes to mind is old derived objects. Were there (or are there) people using ClearMake?

Registered: Apr 08, 2008 11:40:52 PM Actually of course that probably is it... the example you gave - it is a tutorial vob. In the training courses you use ClearMake even if it isn't part of your real regular usage.

Posted: Jul 23, 2010 09:10:05 AM   in response to: gdorrell in response to: gdorrell's post I just used the example readily available in the MAN pages, not one from our environment.

Our users do not use ClearMake. I understand that they are typically there due to checkouts, but there an no checkouts in the VOB. Many of the references point to views that no longer exist (and have long since been removed and/or corrupted).

As an example, we have one VOB with one project where there are 10 views. There are 8 references to those views in describe -l, but one other view is not in there, yet it is still a valid view.

Is it because they have an activity? Is it because they checked something into an activity (that was a work object)?
Are there any other reasons why they would be in there? I guess we need to understand the reasons the view show up before we can be sure they can be deleted.

Posted: Jul 26, 2010 10:49:29 AM   in response to: gdorrell in response to: gdorrell's post It is my understanding that a view shows up in that list if the view has a checkout in that vob or a derived object.
Since you don't have DOs, you can test it easily by creating a new view and check the list (it won't be there) and then doing a checkout (it will be there) and then do a ci or unco and it should be gone again.

Posted: Jul 26, 2010 01:33:55 PM   in response to: martina in response to: martina's post I completed that test, and as expected (by both of us), the entry was removed.

My concern is where there are no checkouts in the VOB (in find checkouts all views, all users) yet there are still many entries in the "describe -l" listing.

Is this something to be concerned about? Can the older entries be removed if they no longer point to valid (or existing) checkouts?

Any more feedback would be appreciated. It seems that this doesn't function as everyone thinks it does (views not displayed only if they have DO objects or checkouts).
