Posted: Nov 02, 2010 03:55:27 PM whenever I tried to create a VOB that contains UCM, there 2 questions: 1. there are 2 check boxes at the first page: "This VOB will contain UCM components" and "Create as a UCM project VOB". the thing is if you dont check the second box leaving the first one checked, the system won't let you click "finish" at the end of configuration.

So then I create a base clearcase without UCM, suceeded.
then I tried to check both attempting to make a UCM clearcase VOB, but an error box pops out while creating the VOB, as shown:

The only significance of the first checkbox "This VOB will contain UCM components" is to have the wizard ask you if you want to create components (either VOB-level or sub-VOB level) at the time of VOB creation. It certainly is not necessary since you can create the component(s) later after the VOB is created. A VOB does not need to be "marked" for UCM at the time of creation unless it will be a UCM PVOB (the second checkbox).

What you describe doesn't make sense. If you created the VOB in Base ClearCase, then all you would need to do is to either: 1. Make the existing VOB a VOB-level component, or 2. Make a new component in the existing VOB. You would NOT make a new VOB of the already existing VOB.

Another note: Although it is possible to create a VOB that is both a UCM Project VOB (PVOB) and a UCM Component VOB (where UCM components can be stored), it is not at all typical and not recommended. PVOBs store a lot of UCM object data that should be kept separate from your component data. It is usually only done in test environments or when an existing UCM project needs access to a single, old legacy VOB that doesn't fit in your existing UCM PVOB structure.
